Our hearing is the only sense that works 24/7. Because it never rests, it gradually experiences “wear and tear”. The resulting hearing loss can lead to tinnitus, cause social isolation and increase the risk of cognitive decline/dementia.
People with high frequency hearing loss often complain that they struggle to hear what is being said especially in noisy environments. This is because the high frequency range includes the speech frequencies. While you may be hearing certain sounds at a comfortable level, it’s often the clarity of speech that’s missing making it extremely difficult to follow conversation.
There are other causes of hearing loss such as loud noise exposure, or damage to the middle ear.
